Songs of the Year 2011
1. Wye Oak - “Civilian” - Civilian
As a shout out to Spin Magazine, their monthly free sampler provided this song to me (along with #4, #7, and #18; clued me in to #16, #17, and the artist featured in #25) and I played it over and over and over again. I saw Wye Oak live twice and the guitar solo never lived up to the studio version, which is excellent. Wye Oak is also perhaps responsible for the cover of the year with their take on Danzig’s “Mother”.
Also, it bears mentioning (particularly in a live setting), that Jenn Wasner sings and plays guitar while Andy Stack plays drums and keyboard simultaneously. Still not sure how he does it and does it well.
